Robert-Koch Swimming Centre

Products used

The newly built high-performance swimming centre at Robert-Koch-Straße in Halle, Germany, serves swimming stars like Paul Biedermann or Daniela Schreiber as a training facility now. It was built as a replacement for the first swimming centre, which had to be pulled down in 2009 due to its ruinous state. The new Olympic site was inaugurated in November 2011 and stands out due its state-of-the-art technology and its barrier-free design, including a guidance system for the blind. Its core piece is the competition-suitable pool of 50 metres that was not tiled as customary, but was made of steel.

The tiling of the total area of approx. 2,000 sq. m was carried out by Oppermann Bau GmbH in close cooperation with Mr Roman Hentschel, PCI application engineer, and PCI specialist Mr Detlef Liebenau. Their good and longstanding collaboration goes back to a master craftsman training course at the Chamber of Crafts in Halle, where business manager Alf Oppermann as a former "Master tiler aspirant" got to know the voluntary lecturers Mr Stefan Hofmann and Mr Roman Hentschel of PCI Augsburg. Years after having past successfully his master exam, Alf Opperman uses PCI products now. Besides their rapid and easy processing, he appreciates the well-balanced PCI product range. Alf Oppermann can rely on his experience and on the proven product quality, so that no other than PCI products are required.

So for priming the pool border as well as all wall and floor areas Oppermann used the protecting bonding primer PCI Gisogrund. Slots, cracks and joints were filled with the solvent-free Epoxy binder PCI Bauharz. The major challenge was to waterproof the pool border. This task was mastered by means of a composite waterproofing with Seccoral 2K, PCI’s waterproofing slurry. And, on the other hand, the special waterproofing tape system PCI Pecitape® 120 was used to get waterproof corner joints and connection joints. The secure bonding between the waterproofing tape PCI Pecitape and the stainless steel pool at the pool border was ensured by applying PCI Collastic. This waterproof two-component reaction resin adhesive cures rapidly to form a flexible bond. In the showers, once again PCI Seccoral, which is suitable to be used beneath ceramic coverings in wet areas, was used as a flexible, bonded waterproofing barrier. For bonding the tiles to floor, walls and pool border, the tiling experts used the tile adhesive PCI Nanolight. The cementitious special grout PCI Durafug NT, which is well suited for commercial premises, swimming pools and drinking water reservoirs, was used for grouting. It stands out due to its high resistance to neutral and alkaline detergents and to mechanical stress, such as the cleaning with high-pressure devices. The movement joints at the floor were filled with the polyurethane joint sealant PCI Elritan 140. Finally, Oppermann with altogether ten employees was able to complete the tiling work within the scheduled time of ten weeks.
