Solid floor to handle influx of visitors to cultural events
Vogtland-Hall in Greiz
Up to now, the East Thuringian town of Greiz had "only" a theatre - however, this was to change with the development of a city hall. Within 2.5 years a landmark for the Vogtland was created, featuring a floor area of approx. 3,000 m². During planning, sufficient space was allowed to accommodate a large number of visitors. Especially the foyer, which represents the entranceway and central distribution for the public areas of the city hall, must endure a lot of foot traffic. To simultaneously satisfy the high optical requirements, the Greiz-based Freizeit- und Dienstleistungs GmbH decided in favour of stylish large-size porcelain stoneware tiles. These tiles were installed on an overall area of 1,000 m² by the specialists of the tiling company UHNAG GmbH, in close consultation with PCI applications engineer Stefan Hofmann and PCI technical consultant Jörg Schulze. The respective area covered two storeys, including an impressive stairway.
The tiles selected were embedded in a heated anhydrite screed. However, since the screed did not conform to the high requirements on flatness, the PCI specialists recommended to sand and level the substrate. To achieve this, the building specialists used the very low-emission floor levelling compound PCI Periplan. Prior to installation of the tiles, the specialists applied the primer PCI Gisogrund to the floor. As further protection of the anhydrite screed against moisture, they sealed the area of the direct foyer entrances with PCI Seccoral 1K. To allow virtually void-free installation of the large-size plates on the floor, the building specialists made use of the flexible non-sag flowable adhesive PCI Nanoflott. It compensates temperature fluctuations and substrate tension, thus protecting the floor covering from cracks. The grout is also waterproof so that the influx of visitors cannot harm the floor even on rainy days. The fast acting flexible joint grout PCI Rapidfug was applied in the area between the tiles. In finishing, the specialists sealed the end wall joints and expansion joints with the elastic silicone joint sealant PCI Silcofug E.
In addition to the entry foyer as pivotal point of the new city hall, the building specialists also went to work on the changing and sanitary rooms, as well as kitchen and storage area. The UHNAG GmbH team installed approx. 1,400 m² Villeroy and Boch ceramic mosaic tiles in the size 2.5 x 2.5 cm with the help of PCI FT Flexmörtel in the sanitary rooms. Concerning grouting, the specialists decided in favour of the flexible joint grout PCI Nanofug. It convinces by its water and dirt repellent surface and facilitates cleaning due to the easy-to-clean effect. Before installing the surface material in kitchen and storage areas, the building specialists sealed the substrate with the waterproof and crack-bridging membrane PCI Pecilastic W, as well as the flexible waterproofing PCI Seccoral 1K. This created a reliable base for the subsequent installation of tiles, which were attached with the flexible adhesive PCI Nanolight. For final grouting, the building specialists used the special cementitious joint grout PCI Durafug NT. This joint is highly recommended particularly for commercial kitchens, since they require much attention to hygiene and cleanliness. Thus, it is especially resistant against acidic cleaners and high pressure cleaning up to 100 bar.
With the new construction of the Vogtland-Hall in Greiz, the East Thuringian city will have an eventful future in store. The solid floor that anticipates a large number of visitors, stands as a symbol of a powerful period for the cultural landmark.
